Shape House, the buzzed-about Los Angeles "urban sweat lodge", is making a pop-up debut in East Hampton.
Each session at Shape House is $50, or clients can buy a package (five for $220, 10 for $400, or 20 for $760).
Shape House founder Sophie Chiche started her sweat studio after losing 200 pounds. “I was constantly thinking, How do I lose my next 20? There was this personal quest for wellness,” she says. She started exploring how to sweat—in comfort.
Sweating, the theory goes, can release toxins from the body. Reported benefits include hormonal balancing, skin brightening, insomnia and migraine relief, and boosts to both energy and mood. “Toxins in the body affect people in different ways,” she explains. “I may have sleeping problems or a hard time losing weight, while you might suffer from migraines.”
Shape House isn’t your average sweat session: Clients lie on beds, wrapped in sleeping-bag-like pouches that heat to 165 degrees. “It’s a homey environment. The girls we hire explain the process and get you tucked in and help you find something to watch on TV while you sweat.” What’s more, there are no locker room vibes here. “It’s a clean sweat; it doesn’t smell,” Chiche maintains.
By the end of the 55- minute session, your heart will be racing; you’ll eventually feel very relaxed yet not tired. “It gives you more ‘bounce,’” Chiche says. The pop-up is open through September, with a New York City location debuting this fall. Says Chiche, “New Yorkers come to the Hamptons for their breathing space. It’s one reason we wanted to be here.” 66 Newtown Lane, #10B, East Hampton, 855-567-2346; shapehouseplus.com
