Master of event productions, including notable East End weddings, Sag Harbor resident Sofia Crokos will lend her expertise to this year’s Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue benefit on July 11.
When celebrity event and wedding planner Sofia Crokos woke up on the day of her own nuptials to news of an oncoming hurricane, she was shocked. “I’d had an amazing track record up to that point,” says Crokos, who has rarely implemented a Plan B for bad weather in her 16-year career. While her Mediterranean-inspired reception at a private home in Bridgehampton (which had been three months in the making) had to be canceled, Crokos and her now-husband exchanged vows as planned that morning (after a clambake the night before that went off without a hitch and proved most celebratory). “It was one of those unforgettable moments,” Crokos recalls. “The people who I cared about the most came together in full support.”
The quick-thinking industry pro knows how to resolve unforeseen setbacks, and she sure knows how to plan a party. On July 11 she will apply her signature style and expertise to organizing the annual benefit for the Sagaponack-based Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue at the Southampton estate of Ellen and Chuck Scarborough.
Following her wedding, Crokos relocated to Sag Harbor year-round, a move that proved full circle for the Brooklyn-born designer, who grew up summering on the North Fork and in Greece. Having planned more than 20 events in the Hamptons over the past decade—including the wedding of Robert Downey Jr.—she acknowledges forming wonderful relationships with the vendors here, which always makes events run more smoothly. She favors arrangements from Sag Harbor Florist, clambakes from Peter Ambrose Events, garden designs by Ron Wendt Design, and hosting affairs at venues like Topping Rose House, Wölffer Estate Vineyard, and Osteria Salina. “It’s great to be here full-time,” she says, “to keep those relationships strong, and to stay inspired.”
Regarding her Hamptons events, Crokos adds, “It’s really important for me to tap into what is around us before we bring something in from a third party. We are so fortunate to live in a place where the best of everything is available right at our doorsteps.”
