Coreyswave surf instructor and high school science teacher Erik Schwab finds magic in photographing the Montauk waves.
“It’s different out here. The light is special and the energy is amazing. Montauk has a unique vibe to it that is not only special to Long Island but to the entire East Coast. There is a surf culture in Montauk that is a tight-knit group of people. We all come from different walks of life but share a bond when out in the water.
Surfing is a big part of my life, and because of that these friends have become family. There is a comfort factor that we all have, and there’s always a friendly face on the beach. My love of surfing is why I started taking photos. I wanted to capture those moments on the water and put them in real form. Shooting a moment that only happens for a couple of minutes is the ultimate experience for me.
Each picture looks so different from the other. It’s alluring and keeps you coming back for more. “The ocean and surfing are my life. This is my passion, my bread and butter. Whether I’m teaching in a classroom about the weather and waves, or I’m teaching someone to surf, I feel like I’m spreading a little magic and the joys of life on the coast.” 516-639-4879
