The Blackbird VII turns waterways into highways with a fast alternative to driving around the Hamptons.
The air-conditioned cabin of the Blackbird hovercraft features adjustable shockwave seating and gull-wing doors, allowing for easy loading of golf clubs, surfboards, or paddleboards.
“It’s definitely a quality-of-life thing in terms of being able to go from point A to point B in total comfort and just negating the traffic,” says Tom Murray of Blackbird Hovercraft Charters, the company he founded with Brewster Jennings, which uses eco-friendly hovercrafts to transport people by water around the East End. Powerful fans create a cushion of air beneath the hull, lifting the hovercraft above the surface and allowing it to travel over shallow water and in other conditions that prohibit most conventional boats. The Blackbird “cruises at 30 to 35 knots and only burns about four gallons of fuel an hour because we’re not pushing any water,” says Murray. “We’re frictionless.” New to the Hamptons and based at Harbor Marina in East Hampton, Blackbird offers full-day and half-day customizable charters and point-to-point transportation to and from East Hampton and New London, Connecticut; around the North and South Forks of Long Island; and back and forth to Fishers Island, and the company hopes to expand throughout the East End. The enclosed hover-crafts have two gull-wing doors, are fully air-conditioned, and are equipped with independent adjustable shockwave forward seating and Bose headsets. Says Murray, “We’re excited to be here and just want to see if we can solve a problem of transporting people around.” 6 Boat Yard Road, East Hampton, 516-580-1543
