East Hampton’s Hampton Racquet offers “à la court” activities for outdoor family fitness.
Tennis complements your fitness routine and adds to it,” says Hampton Racquet’s John Graham, whose East Hampton facility offers “à la court” tennis clinics and programs.
John Graham, the cofounder and executive director of Hampton Racquet, wants everyone to take their workout outdoors. “One of the greatest things about the East End is you get to explore the best of nature,” says Graham, who has been coming to the Hamptons since 1971. “You can enjoy outdoor fitness. Professional athletes come to play tennis here, and they’re exhausted after 15 minutes because it’s a different type of workout. It uses different resources in your body. Tennis complements your fitness routine and adds to it.”
His club, a family-owned boutique country club in East Hampton, is unique because there’s no blanket membership fee. Instead, all of the programs, clinics, events, and other activities are offered individually, or “à la court.” The mission of Hampton Racquet is all about being active outside and about family fun. “I really focus on getting children to start playing tennis,” he says. “It’s a lifetime sport that the whole family can do together, forever. I still hit with my sister; we’ve been playing together for 40 years now.”
When he’s not on the courts, you can find Graham at outdoor TRX, riding his bike around town, or walking or running on the beach (“There’s no better way to strengthen your knees and ankles!”). Just don’t look for him inside. 172 Buckskill Road, East Hampton, 324-0297
