Interior design is much more than the furniture, materials, and objects you see when you enter a room. Space, structure, form and function are the essential aspects of a home’s design. Hampton Design owner Peggy Fruin approaches her work by thinking about how people will move through and live in the space she’s creating with them. “What I try and do is learn everything there is about the people that are living in the house,” Fruin says. Here, her key design tips guide us through creating the most functional space for individuals at different life stages.
Accessibility for Her
When designing a closet for her, Fruin suggests “lots of little cubbies that she can put things into” and a closet with a lot of hooks so she can see all her clothes. Also essential are large mirrors for dressing and applying makeup and ample space for her to “toss an outfit and move on to the next thing in her day quickly.”
Comfort & Convenience Post-"I Do"
Among the first questions Peggy asks a client are what they want their home to feel like and what they would look for if they were spending the weekend in their dream home. “Most of the time it’s comfort,” she says. When designing for newlyweds, follow-up questions include asking "who does the cooking in the house?" and "who handles the cleaning?" in order to create a living space that meets their needs.
Organization for the Little Ones
Designing for families with kids always begs the question of what to do with all the children’s stuff. “Lots of organizing space solves this problem,” says Peggy. Cubby holes near the walk-in allow children with hats, gloves, boots and even flip-flops to own their own spaces before cruising around the house.
Sophistication in the Kitchen
Functionality and beauty combine to create a sophisticated kitchen for the chef-at-heart to truly enjoy culinary exploration. Peggy always says, “every single inch of a kitchen must have a plan,” and that plan starts with understanding exactly who will be using the space and for what purposes. She goes on,“often times there are a lot of people to cook for, so in this case we’ll install the second kitchen sink, dishwasher, and oven to ease the stress associated with preparation, cleanup and entertaining.”
