TV cooking personality and author of The Happy Cook Daphne Oz pictures her perfect Hamptons summer, from pizza ovens to fantasy dinner guests (hint: Nina Simone is on the list).
What will you be cooking this summer? Anything for the grill— whole fish, squid, sausage, chicken, lamb chops, corn, okra, squash. I’m dying for a pizza oven. We also eat a ton of things raw, since the produce is perfection: zucchini with mint, olive oil, and honey; tomatoes and peaches with feta and scallions.
And how about drinks? I’m a lemonade addict— extra tart with double lemon and half the sugar, plus mint, basil, or cucumber. And [my husband] John is famous for his Aperol spritzes.
What are your favorite places for produce? Round Swamp and Amber Waves—and pulling over at stands. There’s nothing like veggies that were warming on the vine an hour earlier.
How do you relax? I listen to books on tape and podcasts; it’s so relaxing to have someone read to you.
What are your main secret spots? Hero Beach Club is the best new place to stay and play! Grindstone Donuts is a must; it’s owned by Michael Symon’s son, Kyle, who has perfected this insane 48-hour brioche dough.
Who are your biggest chef crushes? Nigella Lawson and Yotam Ottolenghi.
If you hosted a beachside dinner, who would you invite? I’m going with total fantasy: Margaret Atwood, Eddie Murphy, Bob Hope, Winston Churchill, and Nina Simone.
