How the designer and rosé aficionado finds peace amid the Hamptons' summer bustle.
9AM: Before it gets too crazy out there, I stop by Pierre’s for coffee and croissants. I’m not in the Hamptons for the whole summer, so most days for me are about avoiding crowds. When I was younger, I went out a lot, but now I work so much and the weekend offers me rare—and needed!—time to detox.
10AM: On the way back, I go to Loaves & Fishes in Sagaponack. Everything they make is excellent. I pick up deviled eggs to snack on later.
11AM: Then, because I can’t be outside in full sun—sunbathing ended when I turned 30!—I head to the Seafood Shop in Wainscott (I love soft-shell crabs particularly) and the Green Thumb for amazing organic produce.
NOON: For lunch, I get a tuna and artichoke sandwich at Sant Ambroeus, and a gelato, of course: hazelnut or pistachio in summer.
1PM: The rest of the day is low-key, peaceful and depends on weather. I love the Parrish Art Museum at any time of year or biking to all the farm stands. In summer, I’m always in linen shirts, T-shirts and jeans. I love a Brooks Brothers cable sweater and a Borsalino hat. I’m all for pajama glamour, too. I wear Venetian velvet slippers until I lose a pair—and then anything goes. Just no flip-flops. Flip-flops are not for me.
4PM: When the sun wanes, I bike to the beach—usually Atlantic Avenue in Amagansett. I go to the ocean to swim—not to bake. I put on loads of sunscreen. I find a quiet spot. Swimming is exercise and meditation for me.
5PM: On the way back, I stop by Cavaniola’s for their apricot and plum pies. And, of course, their cheeses.
6PM: I love to cook. For dinner, I’ll make whatever is local and fresh. Simple, light fare is best: salads, grilling, all that. A favorite is fettuccine with burrata. I decorate with flowers and truly believe that there aren’t very many places in the world where hydrangeas grow as beautifully as they do in the Hamptons. I like to bring in whatever is growing in the garden. It’s such fun when it turns into dahlia and zinnia season. I also love Flowers by Beth in Amagansett.
7PM: I serve rosé or frosé with a summer dinner. This year, I’ve collaborated with Côtes de Provence producer Domaine Sainte Marie on a limited-edition bottle design for its VieVité rosé. It’s screen-printed with a rose gold and dark green tropicana motif. I wanted to do something that worked with the flavors of the wine. It is artisanal and niche with limited distribution, which I like. It’s special, something you have to hunt for and find. If I don’t serve it chilled or make it frosé, I’ll use it to make the most beautiful blush ice cubes for adding to lemonade.
8PM: My favorite thing about Long Island is the light, and it is particularly remarkable and unique late in the day. It’s easy to understand why so many painters and artists have been inspired here. The summer offers a time to stop and take it in.
