Dream Design Scheme: Ship-Shape Nautical Accents
July 06, 2012
You don't have to live in an ocean-front abode to enjoy the quintessential Hamptons seaside experience. Add a dose of coastal chic to your summer retreat by integrating just a few nautical-inspired home accessories. A playful pillow embellished with anchors or a set of driftwood outdoor lanterns lend a fresh, modern marine style to your space.

Mary Giuliani's Small Bites, Big Stories: "Miss Montauk" Tour
July 05, 2012

I need to come clean. I turned my back on Montauk.
Yes Montauk…the most beautiful beach town in the world that everyone complains is too far of a drive, but once there, no one ever wants to leave.
The town that my family helped pioneer, where my parents met and fell in love, where my grandmother built her first hotel. The town where I first learned how to swim, where I also took my first steps, and the town where I met, fell in love with, and married my husband! Shame on me!!!
What happened?
Well, Montauk did something without asking my permission. It became hip!
No one said “Hey Mary, would you be okay with us turning the old burger shack (where you used to kiss boys) into a Momofuku?!” Or “Remember that place you used to be high scorer on Ms. Pacman? Well now it’s a VIP dance club with velvet ropes.” And where was my memo when someone decided to remove the fish tank from the Crow’s Nest! Didn’t they know that I spent hours on my grandfather’s lap staring at that thing?
So I took personal offense and joined the ranks of people shaking their fists and shouting, “Montauk has changed! It’s not like it used to be!” and then, like a scorned lover, broke up with my childhood beach town and headed to the mountains.
But last week, Montauk, like a great song you forgot you loved, came blaring on the radio inside my head. I realized that I had begun to think of Montauk the same way the cool girls in high school thought of me, after they had been off at summer camp kissing boys and I had been home reading Nancy Drew—it was mostly off my radar but not because I was too cool for Montauk. Montauk, I woefully thought, was too cool for me.
So I set off on a mission to fall back in love with Montauk…and I did! I drove around chasing all my old memories. Turns out they were all still there. So many places have remained untouched (a good thing) and there are some new and shiny places that ain’t half bad (a great thing!).
Here goes: On my journey, I stopped at the old burger shack that is now Momofuku, and guess what? I had THE most AMAZING cookie and iced coffee I’ve ever had in my life while looking at the front of the first hotel in town, built by my grandmother (and still perfectly intact). Between bites and sips, I realized Montauk and I had fallen back in love!
Here is my MISS MONTAUK tour for those who want to fall back in love with her again:
Breakfast - Anthony’s (710 Main St., Montauk, 668-9705)
Celebrating 60 years, this remains the best place for a yummy morning meal after a late night out. They still make the most delicious milkshakes in that same green Hamilton blender.
Lunch - Duryea’s (65 Tuthill Road, Montauk, 668-2410)
Nothing better than sitting outside on the water eating a lobster roll at this unchanged spot that defines Montauk perfection. They also sell cool hats.
Drinks - The Hideaway (364 W. Lake Dr., Montauk, 668-6592)
Best margaritas in Montauk set on an old fishing dock. Don’t miss the Mexican corn…you’ll definitely want seconds.
Dinner - Dave’s Grill (468 W. Lake Dr., Montauk, 668-9190)
Okay, it’s not an oldie but it is REALLY good. My husband can’t get enough of the tempura sushi.
Trouble - The Memory Motel (692 Montauk Hwy., Montauk, 668-2702)
‘Nuff said. Two Mind Erasers and you won’t care (or remember) who you're dancing with.
Recovery Day - Navy Beach (16 Navy Road, Montauk, 668-6868)
Perfect place to experience the simplicity and beauty that is Montauk.

Practically Perfect Serving Trays from Iomoi
July 04, 2012

Lacquer trays, Iomoi (from $150 each). 925-282-1098
When entertaining, a grouping of decorative trays can draw attention to a selection of appetizers, cocktails, or even favorite household ornaments. “You can have different little stations on each one,” such as chips and salsa, nuts, or olives," says interior designer Laura Day, whose projects include homes in Bridgehampton and Amagansett. “For décor, they organize little vignettes around the room or on one table.”
For creating chic tray clusters, Day adores patterned lacquer trays from Iomoi, known in the Hamptons for its popular hostess gifts. Iomoi owners Irene Chen and Matt Grenby, who summer in Bridgehampton, particularly adore these trays as they offer a bright and playful contrast to the traditional East End white décor. “Lay out a bunch of them on a table in different directions,” advises Day. “I’d stick to the same basic color scheme but different patterns; then put different high candle sticks on one, a stack of glass or stone balls on another, and a stack of books on another, so [the trays] become the frame to your vignette. They add a little bit of an exclamation point.”

Andrea Correale's July 4th Burger Buffet
July 03, 2012

For me, July 4th is synonymous with barbecuing all-American burgers. Offer guests the ultimate burger bar with beef, turkey, tuna, and veggie burgers. Buy oversized brioche buns from the bakery and then put out every topping imaginable. Think: guacamole, crispy onions, roasted peppers, feta, blue cheese, cheddar, sautéed spinach, sautéed mushrooms, dill pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup, Thousand Island, barbecue sauce—get creative. Classic potato salad, coleslaw, and green salad make great accompaniments. Or, get really creative and make your own patties:
Décor:
July 4th décor and table settings don’t have to be red, white, and blue. Instead, try crisp white linen, burlap runners, galvanized accessories, and lanterns. This look creates an easy-breezy East End feel that strikes a balance between casual and sophisticated. Navy blue and white also makes a sharp statement and combine two of our country’s colors. Use this palette with teak wood serving pieces and silver nautical or beach-themed table décor.

My Bridgehampton: Alison Brod
July 02, 2012

Alison Brod, founder of the eponymous public relations firm, is proof that even PR powerhouses need a break from the city come summer. Brod shares her favorite Hamptons spots in and around Bridgehampton below.
Favorite Restaurant – Nobu (281 County Road, 39A Rte. 27, Southampton, 504-6575) and Almond. I love how Nobu adapts to the beach town, and Eric Lemonides at Almond (One Ocean Road, Bridgehampton, 537-5665) should have his own talk show—he is so much fun. Get the mac and cheese and make him your friend.
Favorite Nightlife Spot – The pool bar at The Capri (281 County Road, 39A Rte. 27, Southampton, 504-6575), and The Stephen Talkhouse (161 Main St., Amagansett, 267-3117) when a great band is playing.
Favorite Event of the Summer – Whatever party I do at my house, with my own playlist of New Orleans funk and pizzas from a wood-burning oven. My second favorite is Katie Lee’s end-of-the-summer keg party. It’s always extraordinary, and there’s a great group of people.
Favorite Farm Stand – Fairview Farm Stand at Mecox Bay (19 Horsemill Lane, Bridgehampton, 537-6154). They have giant turkeys that like look like peacocks walking around and the corn maize in the fall.
Favorite Place to Shop – Bridgehampton has two of the best stores in the Hamptons, if not all of New York. 25 Park (2415 Main St., Bridgehampton, 537-7525) is the best retailer—somehow Alison Brettschneider finds brands that no one else has, and Maison 24 (2424 Montauk Hwy., Bridgehampton, 537-2488) was the first to carry the Alexandra von Furstenberg (AVF) tinted Lucite home line.
Favorite Best-Kept Secret – Blowouts by Sarah at the Gil Ferrer Salon (2004 Montauk Hwy., Bridgehampton, 537-5805) (one day, maybe Drybar will come to town). I also love Hampton Coffee Co. (869 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 726-2633) for their Soft Serve Fruit Co. outpost and new flavor, tangerine. Hampton Coffee Co.’s chilaquiles are a favorite, too.
