Tata Harper's Green Routine
by MARIEL RITTENHOUSE GOODSON
“Everything is derived from nature, which is so much better for your skin,” muses Tata Harper, founder of the eponymous skincare line. “In the end, that’s the whole goal: to really make your skin beautiful.”
Headquartered on a 1,200- acre farm, a pastoral paradise known as Julius Kingdom in Vermont’s Champlain Valley, Tata Harper Skincare puts Mother Nature in a mortar and pestle, grinding out 100 percent nontoxic emulsions that are as efficacious as they are earthy.
Proving that products needn’t be overloaded with harsh preservatives, irritating fragrances and petrol-derived occlusives, Tata Harper Skincare infuses its proprietary formulations with high concentrations of active botanicals. Harper explains: “Most synthetic products are loaded with silicone, which creates a Saran Wrap effect around your face. It just sits there on the surface and doesn’t let your skin breathe.”
Instead Harper relies on earthbound ingredients like safflower oleosomes, date palm extract and Spanish lavender culled from both her farm and far-flung destinations like Tasmania and the Czech Republic. The result is a nutrient-rich elixir that the skin eagerly drinks in and incorporates into its own processes of repair and protection. “Nourishment is really needed deep in the dermis—the last layer of skin where collagen is produced—in order to keep those collagen fibers flexible,” she says.
No one benefits from the restorative powers of her products more than Harper herself. Although the brand is only a year old, she has successfully launched in boutiques across the country, including Share With Montauk (764 Montauk Hwy.), 27 Hampton Salon (27 Hampton Road, Southampton) and Wellnest in Sag Harbor (125 Main St.). The Colombian-born mother of two may be nomadic by trade—a typical week can include stints in New York, LA and Vermont—but during the summer, she seeks refuge at Montauk’s Surf Lodge. “For me Montauk offers a disconnection from my daily schedule, which is so crazy right now,” she says. “At this stage in my life, I travel so much that I really enjoy the peace and quiet.” tataharperskincare.com
Tata's Summer Skincare Essentials
- SOS for Sunburns: Soothe redness with Tata Harper’s Rejuvenating Serum ($150), a deeply curative treatment brimming with 29 active ingredients like narcissus bulb, alfalfa and date extracts, which help counteract UV-related cellular damage and replenish sun-sapped skin.
- Beauty Reboot: A summer splurge—whether it’s overindulging in cupcakes or caipirinhas—can wreak havoc on the skin by creating an acidic environment that stresses cells. To rebalance from the inside out, sip alkalizing watermelon juice, which, Harper says, “helps improve collagen and hydration levels.”
- Clean Sweep: Shuttling between bone-dry air-conditioning and the sun’s moisture-sucking rays can create a layer of dulling buildup on the skin’s surface. To gently slough away dead cells, suds up once a day with Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser ($75), which is packed with exfoliating apricot-seed powder to encourage a more luminous, uniform complexion.
