“WHEN I DESIGN a collection, I consider our heritage, what makes us different,” says Margherita Missoni about her inspirations. With a uniquely rich history running through her family tree, her personal history offers endlessly inspiring garments and objects, collections gifted over the years from designers and fashion icons the likes of Anna Piaggi and her own grandmother, Rosita Missoni.

Eclectic and rare pieces contribute to Margherita’s bohemian style—something she has, in turn, brought to the fashion world by ushering in a distinctively youthful vision of modern elegance. In the past year, she has embraced her talent by designing and managing development of the accessories and Missoni Mare collections. Envisioning the urban woman as a traveler and adventurer, the fall collection marries “primitivism and 20th-century visual art,” creating that unforeseen magic of two disparate influences meeting at the right moment. “Africa meets Scotland, folk meets punk,” is how Margherita describes it. We can’t help but wonder if that worldly, mystical character is designed with Margherita in mind.

And while the international fashion heiress spends summers traveling the Mediterranean, she stops in our beloved neighborhood for surfing in Montauk, colorful tunics from Pink Chicken and fresh seafood at the Clam Bar. 1009 Madison Ave., NYC; missoni.com
