MARIA SANSONE: Tell us about Fionula.
KATIE LEE: Fionula is a 10-year-old black pug and the funniest little creature I’ve ever known. She has incredible personality, sometimes a little too human-like! I like to joke that she is the reincarnation of a woman who used to live on the Upper East Side, wear Chanel suits, eat lunch on Madison Avenue and smoke cigarettes all day.
Dogs are so funny. Does Fionula do anything silly?
Fionula loves to get into people’s purses. It all started years ago when I had a piece of cornbread in my bag and she found it. Ever since, she’s been looking for more. She gets into bags and takes out all the contents. She’s quite fond of makeup as well, and will try to eat lipstick and concealer if I don’t catch her first.
Have you always loved dogs?
I have always loved dogs, and all animals, for that matter. I grew up with a Jack Russell terrier that had all kinds of energy, so Fionula was a big switch—considering a leisurely stroll down the beach is about her maximum.
How has Fionula enriched your life?
I can’t imagine my life without her as my companion. She makes me smile every time I look at her and all her little snorts and snores make me laugh. Dogs give our lives so much color!
Why is the East End a great place to have a dog?
The Hamptons are a very dog-friendly community. I think Fionula is happier out here because she gets to run and play in the yard and go for beach walks. Most stores allow dogs inside, so it’s nice to be able to bring her to town as well if I go shopping.
Are you involved with local shelters in the Hamptons?
I’ve supported North Shore Animal League here on Long Island for years. They are a great no-kill organization and my friend Beth Ostrosky Stern is their spokesperson.
What is Fionula’s favorite thing to do in the Hamptons?
Fionula’s favorite thing to do is sunbathe on the deck. She loves to find a sunny spot and just luxuriate.
