Here’s one way to tell if someone is an especially gifted giver: She obsesses over creating the perfect swag bag for guests… at her own wedding. Such was the case with Amanda Poses, whose Manhattan- and Bridgehampton-based gift business Fill-R-Up has become the go-to for New Yorkers seeking stylish, personalized presents for pretty much every occasion under the sun. Poses and her husband were married in Newport, Rhode Island, and as she recalls, “We did little tote bags with anchors embroidered on them, stamped AMANDA AND RUSSELL. We filled them with fun beach stuff, and everyone carried them all weekend. I look back, and I think that probably planted the seed.”
Poses has an impressive gifting pedigree. A former event coordinator for high-end fashion brand Escada, she was tasked with coming up with creative gifts for the company’s VIP clients. “We couldn’t send another luxury brand,” she explains, “and it was really challenging to find something personalized and elegant.” She started Fill-R-Up on the Upper East Side in 2003 as a way to offer clients exclusive, unique, high-end gift baskets with a customized touch, and since then the business has blossomed into a favorite of blue-chip corporate clients such as W Hotels, Goldman Sachs, and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Clients can pick up items à la carte for various requests, such as baby shower favors or hostess gifts, or leave it to Poses’s team of experts (she currently employs a staff of eight) to create baskets, party favors, or invitations.
Monogramming is one of Fill-R-Up’s most sought-after types of personalization; it can be applied to everything from elegant embroidered initials on linens and bags to housewares such as pitchers, melamine trays, and ice buckets. “I got obsessed with it,” Poses laughs. She says when you monogram, “it looks like you went the extra mile.” She’s always on the lookout for brands that aren’t easily found elsewhere, especially local items. “I like to work with younger designers, newer companies, and I’m always looking for the new hot item,” she offers.
The Hamptons store is small but welcoming, with what Poses describes as a “white, airy, beach-town feel.” Not surprisingly, the merchandise is in tune with the preoccupations of summer residents. “It’s such a social place, with so much entertaining, whether it’s a two-person barbecue or a 50-person party,” she explains. “It really expanded my hostess-gift inventory.” The store hosts seasonal events, along with daily activities for kids, “to keep them happy while their parents are shopping,” says Poses, herself a mother of two. Although there are no immediate plans to expand the empire, she has considered opening Fill-R-Up outposts in other entertaining-friendly destinations such as Palm Beach, Westchester, and Los Angeles. But for now, Poses is happily occupied making life easy for her cadre of glamorous clients out East. “I’m sort of like their gift concierge,” she says.
