DID YOU KNOW
The hamlet of Water Mill is the only settlement on the South Fork of Long Island that has both a functioning windmill and water mill.

Both Water Mill and Syosset are hamlets, which are communities within a town that are not villages but are next to a village and do not have their own government.

EDITOR’S PICK
The Southampton Hunt & Polo Club is one of the largest polo clubs in America and offers opportunities for every type of polo player. While they of course host tournaments, you can still come here to play the game for leisure. They have indoor facilities for the off-season, and the club has a horse farm that trains 200 horses, to help make your game that much better. 206 Millstone Road, Water Mill, 516-729-6154; southamptonpolo.com

VIVA ITALIA
At Robert’s, chef de cuisine Natalie Byrnes adds Italian coastal cooking to a cozy setting that will make you want to hunker down with a glass of wine and a loved one. (You can do just that at either the pretty little indoor bar or the outdoor patio.) Start with one of the light salads made with local greens, and move on to the local striped bass with corn, fava beans, fresh tomato and basil ragu. Complement it with creamy polenta with mountain Gorgonzola, and end with the signature summer dessert—peach and blueberry pie with vanilla gelato (made in-house). The prices aren’t exactly cheap, but the heavenly flavors make for a memorable meal. 755 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 631-726-7171; robertshamptons.com—LEANNE SHEAR
