South African beauty Marike Wessels brings some Cape Town heat to our Hamptons shores.
Although she hasn’t lived in the US for long, Marike Wessels, who calls herself a “South African farm girl,” felt an instant affinity for the natural landscape and ocean views of the Hamptons. Dress, Love Stitch ($72). Kelly B., 41 The Plaza, Montauk, 668-2422
Who: Marike Wessels, 26
Why you know her: This South African stunner has posed for Cosmopolitan, Polo, and L’Oréal, and in her home country she starred in an ad campaign for Suitsupply. “The shoot was filmed completely underwater and I had to dive dozens of times to get the perfect shot,” says Wessels. She also proudly launched Elle Macpherson’s lingerie line in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.
Now: On her off days, Wessels stays active by playing volleyball and tennis with friends in Water Mill. A qualified skincare therapist, she hopes to one day open her own clinic out East, incorporating her passion for yoga. “My favorite style to practice is hot power vinyasa,” she says.
On maintaining her heritage: A self-proclaimed “South African farm girl,” Wessels finds solace in the outdoors: “I grew up with nature, the ocean and animals, so I love to be surrounded by a natural environment.” She even brings her South African traditions to the beach: “In South Africa, we call a barbecue a braai, which we do almost daily, and I love being able to braai in the Hamptons.”
Hamptons hangouts: Wessels can be found cycling to Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee in Amagansett (146 Montauk Hwy., 267-5555) or spending time with friends at The Surf Lodge (183 Edgemere St., Montauk, 483-5037). “I recently discovered the cutest romantic little spot in Montauk called the Crow’s Nest (4 Old West Lake Dr., 668-2077), with a bar on the sand. The views are spectacular.”
