As we approach July 4, I think about how each of us explores our inner child at this time of year. We have memories imprinted in our minds of iconic summer moments: picnics beside the ocean, backyard barbecues with family and friends, and parades down Main Street replete with flag waving and high school brass bands. We enjoy eating warm, succulent corn that is freshly farmed from the region’s fields, and going to our bays for delicious and briny clams, oysters, and fresh fish. We love to stay up late and watch the stars come out. As Independence Day approaches, we await the fireworks with eager anticipation.

At this time, let’s also remember what our red, white, and blue represents. Those colors and the annual celebration are not just about decorating a table or finding the right spot to watch fireworks; they are about the fact that we can. The holiday not only gives us the opportunity to appreciate the beauty and special light of the Hamptons but also a chance to contemplate the true meaning of our independence. We are free to enjoy any activity that strikes our fancy, from shopping to surfing.

This weekend relax and surround yourself with loved ones. Indulge in each moment that this holiday makes possible. Take some time out of your busy schedule to reflect on the quiet, exquisite natural beauty surrounding you. Be grateful to live in such a vibrant and wonderful community and give back to this special place by participating in some of our many philanthropic opportunities, including the Southampton Fresh Air Home’s Annual American Picnic, scheduled for July 6. Enjoy the holiday, and I’ll see you in town!
