Katie Lee, Samantha Yanks and Beth Ostrosky Stern
While most people are quick to recognize the importance of family in our lives, the role that friendship plays and the bonds that are formed are just as valuable. Our two cover stars this issue, Beth Ostrosky Stern and Katie Lee, are true friends who have helped one another through quite a bit since they first met here in the Hamptons eight years ago.
The first time I myself met them was in 2006. At the time, I was the fashion director of Hamptons. It was April, the weather was unseasonably warm, and from everything I had heard, the two were close pals, so it did not seem like too daunting a task to schedule both of their cover shoots for one day.
The day started with Katie’s shoot. I went to meet her at her home in Sag Harbor. She was welcoming, but what struck me most was how superbly chic she was (and still very much is). Perusing the racks of clothing, she loved dresses from Ralph Lauren and Chanel, but when she saw a sweet white crochet dress from Fendi with a fabulous oversize patent belt, she got that special glimmer in her eye and declared, “That’s the one. I have to wear it.” Her taste was spot-on: The look wound up being the cover shot.
Afterward, at Howard Stern’s home, Beth also answered the door with a friendly, inviting smile, and in a word, she made styling her fun. She has an extraordinary body, wears a bikini like no one else I have met, loves bohemian dresses and pairs it all with a demeanor so spectacular you just want to give her a hug. Every shot could have been a cover. (She is also a voracious shopper: I connected her with all of the designers she wore, and she bought a bundle.)
Today Katie and Beth support each other as true friends do. You simply do not often find this sincere a bond between two women with the opportunities that they are exposed to. Remembering this when it came time to plan our covers for this summer, I thought, how much fun would it be if the girls “shared” an issue? Depending on where you pick up your issue, you will see what I mean. The extra-special kicker: Howard Stern shot Beth’s cover, as well as all of the photos of the friends together. These are his first published photos, and I can confidently say his moniker “King of All Media” now encompasses an exciting new facet.
