■ Though autumn is the best time to head East, I always visit a few times during the summer. Even before I check into The American Hotel (49 Main St., Sag Harbor, 631-725-3535; theamericanhotel.com), my first stop is lunch at Cittanuova (29 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, 631-324-6300; cittanuova.com).
■ One of my favorite events is the James Beard Foundation’s Chefs & Champagne celebration. Not only is it a great party that attracts some of New York’s most fascinating people, it also gives me the opportunity to check out one of my two favorite vineyards, the beautiful Wölffer Estate (139 Sagg Road, Sagaponack, 631-537-5106; wolffer.com). The other is Bedell Cellars (36225 Main Road, Cutchogue, 631-734-7537; bedellcellars.com), one of the oldest and most delicious vineyards on the North Fork.
■ I also appreciate the chance to take it easy on Cooper’s Beach (268 Meadow Lane, Southampton). It’s one of the most relaxing places on Earth—as long as you arrive on foot or bicycle.

■ After I drop my wife off at Physique 57 (264 Butter Lane, Bridgehampton, 631-537-5722; physique57.com), I’ll drive around and find tag sales or look at houses.
