Evidence that Lucy’s Whey was formerly a small-town barber shop remains, but the old fashioned barber pole outside has been reconceived in the Lucy’s Whey American Artisanal Cheese Shop’s signature red and yellow colors. Today, the three-year-old destination for all things fromage is also a town favorite gathering spot for chitchat, gossip and bonhomie.
“When I started, I’d never even sliced a cheese before,” admits owner Lucy Kazickas, who also has a second location in Manhattan’s Chelsea Market. The East Hampton shop is a little jewel box of treats, fragrant with ripening cheeses, displays of fresh-fruit tarts, beautiful slate and wood cutting boards, local honeys and breads from The Blue Duck Bakery Café of Southampton.
