The Wayuu Taya Foundation, started by Latina supermodel and actress Patricia Velasquez in 2002, helps improve the living conditions of Latin American indigenous groups while respecting their traditions, culture and beliefs. Since its creation, WT has concentrated its efforts in assisting the Wayúu, an indigenous group of over 450,000 people, located in the Guajira Peninsula of northern Colombia and northwest Venezuela. Currently, WT has three schools in the Wayuu region that provide education to over 600 indigenous children. The organization also has a women’s center where indigenous women weave traditional susu bags that are sold to generate income for themselves and their families.
Velasquez is a UNESCO Artist for Peace and an active charity worker. She received the Women Together award at the UN in 2009, and she will be representing the Wayuu Taya Foundation on The upcoming season of Celebrity Apprentice.

| Humble roots: Hirshleifer’s in 1940 |
With its current generation, the key to Hirshleifer’s success is collaboration, says Caryn Hirshleifer, whose family’s Gold Coast namesake store recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. “The store is run by my sisters and me, with some guidance from our mother, and we operate by consensus. We each come with a different background and have our own areas of expertise.” Lauding each woman’s distinctive talents, Caryn, a former attorney, equally divides responsibilities with her sisters Lori, the Hirshleifer’s buyer and merchandiser, and Shelley, manager of operations.
Timed with the brand’s centennial, they launched Why Fashion Matters, a charitable initiative to give back to the community. “The milestone, to me, represents the triumph of industriousness, honesty, creativity, and decency in an industry that sometimes lacks those elements,” says Caryn. “I am proud of what we have accomplished and in the way we have conducted ourselves and our business.”
The store, originally opened by Jacob Hirshleifer as a fur salon at 25 Manhattan Avenue in Brooklyn, is today operated by the family’s fifth generation. They have no plans of slowing down, with a 3,000-squarefoot expansion on the horizon for 2012. “We are always looking, thinking, analyzing, and planning,” says Caryn. “It is a never-ending labor of love.” Americana Manhasset, 2060 Northern Blvd., 516-627-3566

Home Find: A Special Scented Candle

| The Spicy Apple candle by Rosy Rings |
“The subliminal way in which a scented candle transmits a mood is much like lighting,” says interior and furniture designer Richard Mishaan. “When you walk through the door, the mood is set on many sensory levels. For a holiday setting, it is all about sparkle and magic. Nothing does it better than a deep, warm, fragrant charge and the flicker of a candle’s light.”
During the holidays, welcoming scents like crisp red apple with freshly ground cinnamon and clove are preferred over the light citrus and floral aromas that dominate during the spring and summer months. Poured with a soy wax blend and filled with real fruit and spices, the limited edition Spicy Apple candle ($199) by Rosy Rings creates a setting that is rustic yet elegant. The botanical fragrance was the inaugural scent of the 15-yearold Denver-based company, which today still makes its collections of candles, reed diffusers, and potpourri by hand.
“As the candle burns down the middle, the botanicals encased in the wax are illuminated so the whole outside glows,” says Jennifer Nemeth, manager of Martin Viette Home & Garden Shop. “And it’s not only gorgeous looking—its fragrance is phenomenal.” Martin Viette Home & Garden Shop, Americana Manhasset, 2060 Northern Blvd., 516- 869-8020
