Just Good Scents

August 13, 2010

If you’re anything like we are, you don’t have just one signature scent but several— particularly if you like to change up with the seasons. Deciding which of those fetching flacons to take with you for a weekend away or leave at the beach house can be hard, and there’s nothing worse than looking on the vanity only to discover that the one fragrance you most want to wear is the one you didn’t bring. That’s where Fresh comes to the rescue with Petite Perfumes, one-ounce bottles of its best-selling scents. At $32 each, you can afford to double up on favorites (at last count, we had a bottle of Cannabis Santal in three separate locations). Sephora, Walt Whitman Mall, Huntington Station; sephora.com

On a Roll

August 06, 2010

When we head out on a balmy summer night, the cache in our clutch inevitably includes a good solid or roll-on fragrance. In addition to Tocca’s Cleopatra—our solid standby—we’ve recently been toting Ilari's signature blend of jasmine and orange blossom. Unlike other fragrances we’ve tried, Ilari doesn’t double in potency when penned on as an on-the-go touch-up. Good evening, indeed.—APRIL WALLOGA

Blue Period

July 23, 2010

Our love of Yves Saint Laurent’s superb Dessin du Regard eyeliner is well-documented, a favorite shade being No. 3 Oriental Blue ($28). So when we saw this Treesje Blackheart cross-body bag in a similar inky navy ($298), we just had to have it. Perfect for your weekend town-hopping necessities: keys, ID, lippy, credit card and, yes, a matching eyeliner if you so choose. Let’s Bag It, 2161 E. Merrick Rd., Merrick; 516-223-6470

Beach Hair in a Bottle

July 16, 2010

Whether we’re sporting actual beach waves or their cajoled curling-iron equivalent, Philip B.’s Maui Wowie Beach Mist is our new favorite tousling tool. During a recent trip to the steamy, hot Caymans we stowed the sea salt-, aloe vera- and algae-infused surf spray in our carry-on to keep our locks lively and fresh while beachside. In between sunning sessions and dips in the ocean, a spritz or two of B.’s mist helped to calm frizz and prevent kinky half curls that can occur when lying on wet hair. (We also love the redolent-of-the-sea scent that B. Hawaiianized with the addition of Tahitian gardenia, pure orchid, kukui and coconut.) Our favorite way to use the spray—when we’re not fresh out of the ocean—is to mist over damp pre-French-braided hair at night. In the morning, unleash the beach!
